An update and some old pictures

Silas had his 4-week check-up this week, and he's still doing really well. He's gained 1 lb 9 oz since our last visit two weeks ago and the doctor says he's really healthy. There's a strain of Whooping Cough going around the area though, so he really cautioned us against taking Silas into areas of high traffic. A teen in the area wasn't vaccinated and ended up transferring it to a five week-old baby who died because it hadn't been vaccinated yet. So we're being pretty cautious and not taking Silas out a lot until after his two-month check up and shots.

Since Dustin has had trouble finding work (the job market in Rexburg really sucks lately) I have gone back to work as a housekeeper. I'm working at the Comfort Inn here in Rexburg. It's not glamorous and it only pays minimum wage, but it's something at least until Dustin can find some work. He's going to try and get his CDL and drive truck for one of the farms/potato warehouses up here. They're always looking for help, and a CDL is a good backup should this situation happen again later. That's pretty much the update.

Here are some pictures from the delivery and our stay at the hospital. It took me a little while to get them because Cindy had downloaded them to send to Mom and Dad, so I hadn't even seen them until a few days ago!

This is a few minutes after Silas was born - he looks really beat up because of the position he was in when he came out. He was actually sideways with his arm wrapped up around his head. Our poor little guy had a rough time trying to get into the world! Mom and Silas are both very tired.

His face was really swollen and he was very purple-blue at first.

The nurses took him after about ten minutes so they could clean him up and weigh him, etc. Sorry about the background, but at least that light is very bright! The doctor sewing me up is actually not the doctor we went to during the pregnancy. Dr. Zollinger, our regular doctor, was out of town on his one day a week off and didn't get back until after Silas had been born. He was sorry to have missed it, but Dr. Watson was really great and filled in for him.

Weighing Silas and getting him cleaned up a little.

A very tired little man!

A very tired and very proud Daddy! Dustin thought that the birth would be really hard for him to watch because the videos we watched before made him uncomfortable, but he was an amazing coach and was really overcome by the experience. He got to help during the birth and to see everything happening. He really started to get emotional when he saw Silas' face for the first time.

What has to be the best meal I have ever eaten. I wasn't allowed to have anything but ice and water during the last stages of the labor (I think in case soemthing went wrong and they had to intervene with surgery or something.) I even ate the ranch doritos which I normally hate. While Mommy had a very early breakfast or a very late dinner Silas was getting his first bath from our nurse.

Grandpa Beck was so excited to see his new grandson that he snuck out early to come see us and didn't wake up Cindy on purpose so that he could be the first to hold Silas.

A few hours later, though, Grandma and Aunt Tiffany came and got their time in too!

The hearing test they did in the Mother/Baby unit. Dustin went in to see and take pictures. It looks like they have him hooked up to some alien machine, but those are head phones. I don't know how they determine the responses, but he sure looks cute!
